This service manual documents two versions of the 2-litre L-series engine (1,994 cc)—a 4-cylinder inline transverse unit with aluminium block and head, single overhead camshaft, and 5-bearing cast iron crankshaft. The 420D produces 86 hp at 4,500 rpm with a mechanical Bosch VP21 injection pump; the 420Di, SDi, and SDi Lux variants deliver 105 hp at 4,200 rpm and 21.5 m.kg torque at 2,000 rpm, equipped with Bosch VP37 electronic injection pump controlled by ECU for variable advance and EGR management. Lubrication details cover the crankshaft-driven pressure pump, oil-water heat exchanger, and piston cooling jets, with oil pressure specifications of 0.7 bar at idle and 3.8 bar maximum at 3,000 rpm (at 80°C); capacity is 4.9 litres of SAE 10W40–15W40 CCMC-PD2 grade (Unipart GFE 178 filter) with changes at 1,500 km, then 10,000 km, then 20,000 km intervals. Cooling system details include thermocontact or ECU relay-controlled fan operation—without intercooler engaging at 104°C and disengaging at 94°C, or with intercooler closing at 105°C and opening at 94°C. The injection pump drives on a separate toothed belt from the camshaft (replacement interval 140,000 km) with firing order 1-3-4-2 and idle speeds of 850 ± 50 rpm (VP21) or 800 ± 50 rpm (VP37). Injectors are 5-jet dual-stage Bosch units: injector 1 (MSC 100510) incorporates a needle lift sensor, while injectors 2–4 (MSC 100500) open at 200 bar first stage and 320 bar second stage.
