Lead Acid Battery Desulfator and Rejuvenator Circuit

This technical project presents a comprehensive service manual and repair guide for building a pulse-charge desulfator circuit specifically designed to revitalize sulfated lead-acid batteries. Sulfation is a common failure mechanism affecting approximately 80% of lead-acid accumulators in long-term storage or intermittent-use applications. The circuit implements proven pulse-charge technology to break down sulfate crystal deposits that accumulate on battery plates and restore effective electrode surface area. At its core, the design uses a 4047 astable oscillator generating 1 kHz square waves to control a power FET switching stage through an inductor network. This topology generates high-voltage discharge pulses ranging from 15V to 50V depending on the battery's internal resistance characteristics. Three operational amplifier comparators continuously monitor pulse amplitude and drive color-coded indicator LEDs that provide real-time battery health status: green for fully functional batteries, yellow for moderate sulfation, and red for severe degradation requiring extended treatment. The desulfator operates in three distinct modes: preventive maintenance for vehicles stored for extended periods, active desulfation for already-degraded batteries, or continuous operation paired with a trickle charger for long-term conditioning.
